Yercaud Weekend Cycling Trail

Yercaud- “Yeri-Caud” a smart man’s “Lake-forest” or the “poor man’s” no, make that “smart-man’s” ooty, Yercaud is how the Colonial British empire got around to saying “Yericaud” Tamil for “Lake-forest”, now you can’t go wrong with a place that has a lake and a forest in its name for a weekend trail. Spread over 383sq Km in the Eastern Ghats which is generally dry and feature short and rocky hills, Yercaud is a delightful aberration lined with quaint villages, paddy fields, coffee and pepper plantations, succulent orange trees on pathways proving an enchanting trail for cyclists allowing a sense of serenity. Yercaud is less crowded than Ooty or Kodaikanal and hence one barely bumps into the randy tourist but more so will delight in a local’s delicious version of “Puddu” and “Kuzhi paniyaram” and perhaps chat up on its rich history of stone-age implements that have been unearthed from the Sheveroy Hills.

A great way to explore Yercaud is on a cycle. The ride up from Salem to Yercaud is very picturesque and peaceful. And the many roads leading out of Yercaud town through coffee plantations and small villages can be explored at a leisurely pace.
