Tour Overview

Coorg is a land of mist-covered hills, fragrant coffee plantations, winding country roads, and cultures that have shaped this beautiful corner of Karnataka. On the Coffee County Trail, we experience Coorg beyond the usual tourist trail—one pedal stroke, one plate, and one story at a time.

Our journey begins in Gonikoppa, on the edge of the wild, where an evening safari through Nagarhole National Park introduces us to the untamed side of the Western Ghats. From here, we swap the safari jeep for our bicycles and ride through the heart of coffee country, climbing gradually towards Madikeri along quiet roads surrounded by plantations and rolling green hills.

In Madikeri, we go deeper into Coorg’s coffee culture with a guided coffee plantation walk, a visit to a plantation museum, and a chocolate-making experience, discovering the journey from plantation to the flavours we enjoy.

The adventure continues with a challenging ride through Coorg’s peaceful countryside towards Harangi Dam, before we pedal towards Bylakuppe and discover a completely different side of the region—its vibrant Tibetan heritage.

This is not just a cycling tour. It is a journey through wild forests, coffee-scented hills, plantation life, local flavours, rural landscapes, and diverse cultures. A chance to slow down, ride deeper, and experience the many sides of Karnataka’s coffee country.

The Coffee County Trail is designed for anyone who enjoys exploring new places on two wheels and wants to experience Coorg beyond the usual tourist trail.

You don’t need to be a professional cyclist, but you should be comfortable riding a bicycle for several hours and handling rolling terrain, gradual climbs, and longer distances. The tour covers approximately 165 km of cycling over three days, with the longest day being around 65 km.

The route includes some challenging sections, so a reasonable level of fitness and regular cycling experience will make the journey more enjoyable.

Whether you’re a weekend cyclist looking for a new challenge, a traveller who loves exploring slowly, or someone who believes the best way to discover a destination is from the saddle, this journey is for you.

We leave Bengaluru behind and make our way towards Gonikoppa, entering the lush landscapes of Coorg. As the city fades into the distance, the scenery slowly transforms into green countryside, coffee plantations, and forested hills.

After arriving in Gonikoppa, we check into our stay and take some time to settle in.

As evening approaches, we head out for aOne of Karnataka’s most important wildlife habitats, Nagarhole offers a glimpse into the untamed side of the Western Ghats.

As the light begins to soften, keep your eyes open for wildlife moving through the forest and experience the thrill of being in the wilderness.

We return to Gonikoppa after the safari and settle in for the night, ready for the cycling adventure ahead.

Day 2: GONIKOPPA TO MADIKERI

Riding Through Coffee Country
Cycling Distance: 55 km

Today, we trade four wheels for two.

After breakfast, we begin cycling towards Madikeri, riding through the heart of Coorg’s coffee country. The road takes us deeper into the plantation landscape, where coffee estates, pepper vines, forest patches, and rolling green hills become our companions.

As we gain altitude, the terrain gradually becomes more undulating. We ride along quieter countryside roads, away from the rush of the main highways, allowing us to experience Coorg at a slower pace.

The ride is as much about the journey as the destination. There will be time to pause, take in the landscape, and simply enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by the Western Ghats.

By afternoon, we reach Madikeri, check into our stay, and take some time to freshen up and relax after the ride.

Later, we head out to Mercara Gold Estate to discover another side of Coorg. Take a guided plantation walk through the estate, learn about coffee and spice cultivation, and explore the plantation museum to understand the region’s agricultural heritage.

The experience continues with a visit to the chocolate factory, where we get a glimpse into the making of chocolate and savour some of the estate’s creations.

We then return to our stay and come together for a traditional Kodava meal, discovering the flavours and culinary traditions that are an integral part of Coorg’s identity.

Today is our longest and most challenging day on the bike.

We leave Madikeri after breakfast and set out towards Harangi Dam, following quiet countryside roads through the lesser-explored landscapes of Coorg.

The route takes us across rolling hills and undulating terrain, with a few challenging sections along the way. The climbs will test your legs, but the changing landscapes and peaceful surroundings make the effort worthwhile.

This is the kind of cycling that rewards you for slowing down. Rural roads, green valleys, plantations, and small settlements unfold along the route, giving us a glimpse into everyday life in Coorg.

After completing the ride, we take a short drive towards the Harangi Dam area and check into our accommodation.

The evening is yours to relax, recover, and soak in the quiet surroundings after a rewarding day in the saddle.

From Coffee Country to Tibetan Culture
Cycling Distance: 45 km | Drive Distance: 200 km

Our final morning begins with a ride through the countryside towards Bylakuppe.

The roads lead us through the changing landscapes of Coorg before bringing us to one of the region’s most fascinating cultural experiences—the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe.

Here, the landscape takes on a completely different character. We explore the settlement and visit a Tibetan monastery, taking in the colourful prayer flags, distinctive architecture, and peaceful atmosphere.

After exploring, we sit down for a delicious Tibetan meal, with steaming momos and thukpa offering the perfect way to refuel.

After lunch, we freshen up before beginning our drive back to Bengaluru.
